Will Bang a Demon for Magic Powers: My Magical Demon Lover- BL Demo Review

Fuck a demon gain his powers, I shit you not, this is the premise of Yaoi Press‘s upcoming 18+ BL fantasy visual novel, Magical Demon Lover. The game follows Tristan, a young man who must take on a powerful demon lover in order to gain amazing magic powers and become a fabulous wizard! If you’ll remember, I covered the Indiegogo campaign for this game a little while ago and now it’s finally time to test out the goods!! Magical Demon Lover will be a commercial release available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android!

I’m always down for a good romp into the wonderful world of BL/Yaoi, so when Yaoi Press hit me up, I happily clicked that download faster than you could say ‘Power Bottom’. Because, who doesn’t like a good BL supernatural fantasy?!

Junjou Romantica is Problematic As Hell!- Season 1 Review

So I don’t usually write anime reviews here, but, after watching season 1 of Junjou Romantica I have some strong feelings about the series as a whole, none of them good. I should clarify that I rather enjoy problematic BL/yaoi, hell, I absolutely adore Yamane Ayano’s Finder Series, it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. But, the infinitely lighter BL classic Junjou Romantica just rubs me the wrong way. So why am I “okay” with Finder, but not okay with Junjou? Well, part of it has to do with when I started both series.

I started Finder rather early on in my BL/yaoi journey, at a time when I was still figuring what I liked and didn’t like from the genre. The steamy smut, was definitely appealing, but upon subsequent readings (especially those first few volumes) I find myself actively cringing at how… problematic the whole thing is.

On the other hand, I started Junjou long after I’d been in the BL fandom, so I just don’t have any nostalgia for the series the same way I do with Finder. To make matters worse, I have read and watched some truly amazing BL/yaoi over the years, and it has spoiled me a bit for some of the older much more flawed “classics” the genre has to offer. So, when I finally sat down to watch Junjou Romantica, a series people have been recommending to me for years, lets just say I had high hopes.

Spoiler Alert: I was not amused, in fact I was horrified to discover that this was the series that sparked many a BL journey! This is the BL anime that people fondly celebrate and praise… Junjou Romantica is problematic as hell! But, does that really make it a bad anime? Or is it a seriously flawed, but ultimately salvageable anime?

Eh, that’s still up for debate. So, in a rather unprecedented turn of events I’m actually going to attempt to write a proper anime review here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero (I already write reviews over at MANGA.TOKYO, so don’t get used to it)… Also, y’all can thank Kat over at GrimmGirl.com for this, this is purely for her… Let’s get this review on the road, shall we?

Let’s Show Our Support for My Magical Demon Lover: A BL Dating Sim

Hey hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, it’s been a LOOOOONG time since I wrote one of these (bear with me while I get back into the swing of things), but there’s a new crowd funding campaign over on Indiegogo for an upcoming BL dating sim, My Magical Demon Lover from Yaoi Press Games.

For those of you new, here, Let’s Show Our Support posts highlight current crowdfunding campaigns for indie games (usually VNs and OELVNs). I give you guys the basic rundown of the game and the perks of supporting the game’s campaign, as well as links to all the relevant game related pages and sites.

Y’all know how I feel about BL games, so when Yamila emailed me about the game, I knew I just had to whip something up! The Yaoi Press team is currently looking to raise funding to help with the current production schedule and to expand on the content of the game.

Bite Sized Reviews- Dream Daddy

The first post of the year and it’s a review of Game Grumps’ Dream Daddy. Right, so the the long and short of it; you get to date DILFs… except Brian… homeboy is a dad I don’t want to f***. Now, I’m going to be honest, I only bought this game for the LOL’s… I did not take this game seriously going in, I mean come on, it’s a game about dating single dads. So, I went in expecting the game to be on par with Usaya Co.’s My Horse Prince, so color me surprised when Dream Daddy actually managed to deliver some rather solid gameplay (and a hefty amount of eye roll inducing dad jokes).

I Ship It: 5 Non-Canon Couples That Totally Should Have Been Canon- BL Edition

Have you ever seen two characters that you knew were perfect for one another? Friends that have known each other since they were in diapers. Or maybe bitter rivals that hate each other, but still somehow harbor a deep respect for one another. Or perhaps, they’re the unstoppable baka duo on a high school sports team. I’m talking about those bonds forged through a deep emotional connection between two characters, the kind of bond that transcends the confines of the author’s original intent! RELATIONSHIPS BORN FROM THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF FANS… BEAUTIFUL DELUSIONS THAT GIVE A MIDDLE FINGER TO THE CANON SENSIBILITIES OF THE CREATORS!!

It’s shipping.

I’m talking about shipping…

Whether you love it or hate it, shipping is an integral part of every fandom. If two characters so much as breathe the same air as one another, I guarantee there is a person out there that ships it. But, are shippers really as crazy as folks make them out to be? Is there any basis for their pairings? Are there secret hints hidden in the source material that supports these ships? *shrugs noncommittally* I’m kind of on the fence about shipping, on one hand I do ship characters and I quite enjoy fanfiction, but, I also don’t go out of my way to ship X character with Y character while watching or reading something… that is unless the subtext is blatantly obvious, and that’s how this post was born!

There are times when the subtext is just so in your face you can’t help but connect the dots. In this post I’m going to spotlight 5 non-canon pairings that should have been canon, because… reasons!! This list is not in any particular order, I just listed the pairings in the order they came to me, which I suppose could be used to suss out which pairings are my favorite… but, it’s not. My real OTP isn’t even on this list because as much as I hate to admit it, there really isn’t any in series evidence for the pairing… not that it stops me from loving that particular ship. So, all aboard, this ship is about to set sail!!

Blind Men- BL Game Review

Blind Men is a lighthearted spy fiction BL visual novel created by Man Eater Games. The game follows  Keegan, a young man who dreams of becoming a super villain just like his uncle. But, he still has a lot to learn, when his first heist goes awry he finds himself the unwilling ally of two spies each with their own hidden agendas.

This is a commercial release, coming in at a cool $3.99 USD and is playable on Windows and Mac operating systems. Blind Men is a rather short game with two love interests, a Russian spy, Sergei and Hunter, an American Special Agent. Despite it’s rather short run time, the game offers hours of fun and EIGHT unique endings!

Big thank you to the Man Eater Games team for sending me a review copy of the game!

Let’s Show Our Support for “Chess of Blades” A BL Visual Novel (Relaunched)!!

Edit (6/29): The Kickstarter for this game was successful at meeting its funding goal. The final funding amount was $6,738 with 234 backers! The game now has a tentative release date of October/November 2017!

I am super late with this post, I seriously meant to have it up weeks ago, but better late than never, am I right? Back in March Argent Games launched a Kickstarter campaign for their second BL visual novel Chess of Blades, however they were unable to raise the necessary funding by their April deadline… so, they took a step back to reevaluated the project and I am happy to say that they are giving Kickstarter another go!! So, if you missed out on supporting the first campaign now is the time to show your support!!

In the time between the first campaign and the current one, Argent Games has been hard at work bringing polishing Chess of Blades into something spectacular! New characters, improved artwork and more await in this upcoming BL title!

Full Service- Demo Review

Double entendres and buff naked hunks abound in Herculion’s upcoming 18+ BL game, Full Service. The game follows Tomoki Nakamoto an overworked young office worker with a rather cynical outlook on life. When a stranger hands him a business card to the Full Service Spa, he encounters a colorful cast of characters that are more than happy to help Tomoki relieve a little “stress”. The game is currently on Kickstarter, so feel free to stop by and show your support, there are still a few days left in the campaign.  Full Service will be a fully voiced commercial release, and will be available for PC (Windows, Mac, Linux) and Android.

You know, I knew there was something familiar about this game, and after re-reading the Kickstarter page again, I discovered something that genuinely surprised me. Herculion isn’t a new group, Herculion is Black Monkey Pro reborn! I thought I was done with BMP after I reviewed the Bacchikoi Expansion Pack, but nope…they are the gift that just keeps on giving!
