The Hero That Stole My Heart: Six Reasons Bakugo Katsuki is My Favorite Hero!

I’m not really a big fan of shounen anime, years of Naruto and Bleach kind of burned me out on the genre as a whole. But, recently I’ve found myself falling in love with shounen anime again and it’s thanks in part to My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia for you elitists out there)! I don’t know what it is about the series, but from the very first episode, this anime made me feel things. It brought back all the excitement and fun I had when I was new to the anime fandom, back when I was enamored with the shinobi in Naruto and the mamodos and bookkeepers of Zatch Bell!

My Hero Academia almost single-handedly restored my love of anime and it is for that reason I was moved to write about the series here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero. But, rather than talking about the series as a whole, I’d like to shine a spotlight on my absolute favorite character: Bakugo Katsuki!

katsuki 2.png
Look at that smile! Doesn’t it just melt your heart?!

Katsuki is a character that has been very misunderstood, sure he’s a bit rough around the edges, but this hero-in-training stole my heart from the moment he was introduced! Who cares about Deku or Todoroki?! The only character I stand behind is Bakugo Katsuki, he is hands down my favorite character in the series!

[OWLS Blog Tour] Falling in Love With My Best Friend: The Strength of Friendship in No. 6

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, I’m back with another super special awesome OWLS Blog Tour! What’s that you say? You don’t know about OWLS? Well, for those of you new here, OWLS or Otaku Wariors for Liberty and Self-Respect is a group of bloggers, vloggers, and writers who seek to promote acceptance and equality through thoughtful community activism, with an otaku twist! Each month we decide on a theme and each member writes a post or records a video, on that theme through the lens of something from pop culture. We have been known to cover a wide range of topics, from anime and manga to video games and film, most subject matter is up for discussion so long as it fits with our monthly theme.  This month’s theme is Squad!

“Although some people may like to be alone at times, we all have that one special friend or a squad of friends who we kick it and have some good laughs and fun with. However, there are friendships that don’t last a lifetime and usually, they end due to a falling out or a misunderstanding. For this month’s topic, we will be exploring some of the best friendships in anime and pop culture as well as the friendships that ended suddenly. We will talk about what a true friendship means to us, what we learned about ourselves and others through broken friendships, and our definitions of a “good friend.””

March 2018 “Squad” Blog Tour Prompt

I’m just one in a long line of Blog Tour stops this month, and I highly recommend checking them all out when you have the time. Just before me was my boy Takuto from Takuto’s Anime Cafe, with his beautiful post about my favorite sports anime series Haikyuu.

Our members have really outdone themselves this month with some phenomenal personal and pop culture inspired posts! This month I decided to look at the anime series, No. 6! Nothing says Best Friends 4 Lyfe, like overthrowing a longstanding dystopian society! Amiright?!

Junjou Romantica is Problematic As Hell!- Season 1 Review

So I don’t usually write anime reviews here, but, after watching season 1 of Junjou Romantica I have some strong feelings about the series as a whole, none of them good. I should clarify that I rather enjoy problematic BL/yaoi, hell, I absolutely adore Yamane Ayano’s Finder Series, it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. But, the infinitely lighter BL classic Junjou Romantica just rubs me the wrong way. So why am I “okay” with Finder, but not okay with Junjou? Well, part of it has to do with when I started both series.

I started Finder rather early on in my BL/yaoi journey, at a time when I was still figuring what I liked and didn’t like from the genre. The steamy smut, was definitely appealing, but upon subsequent readings (especially those first few volumes) I find myself actively cringing at how… problematic the whole thing is.

On the other hand, I started Junjou long after I’d been in the BL fandom, so I just don’t have any nostalgia for the series the same way I do with Finder. To make matters worse, I have read and watched some truly amazing BL/yaoi over the years, and it has spoiled me a bit for some of the older much more flawed “classics” the genre has to offer. So, when I finally sat down to watch Junjou Romantica, a series people have been recommending to me for years, lets just say I had high hopes.

Spoiler Alert: I was not amused, in fact I was horrified to discover that this was the series that sparked many a BL journey! This is the BL anime that people fondly celebrate and praise… Junjou Romantica is problematic as hell! But, does that really make it a bad anime? Or is it a seriously flawed, but ultimately salvageable anime?

Eh, that’s still up for debate. So, in a rather unprecedented turn of events I’m actually going to attempt to write a proper anime review here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero (I already write reviews over at MANGA.TOKYO, so don’t get used to it)… Also, y’all can thank Kat over at GrimmGirl.com for this, this is purely for her… Let’s get this review on the road, shall we?

[OWLS Blog Tour] How a Scoundrel from the Slums Became an Icon: The Rise and Fall of Joe Yabuki

Hey Hey Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs, I’m back with my second OWLS Blog Tour post of the new year! This month’s theme is Competition!

In honor of the 2018 Winter Olympics, this month topic will focus on the theme, “Competition” because the Olympics is where athletes from all countries join together to compete in sporting events. Through these events, we see how “competition” brings out the grit, the teamwork, and the competitive spirit within athletes. This month, we will be exploring anime and pop culture media that discusses the good and the bad when it comes to competition and what it can teach us about ourselves and the world around us.

February 2018 “Competition” Blog Tour Prompt

I’m just one in a long line of Blog Tour stops this month, and I highly recommend checking them all out when you have the time. Just before me was Auri  from over at Manga Toritsukareru Koto, with her phenomenal post about Aoharu x Kikanjuu.

For this month’s tour I decided to go with the classic fighting anime Ashita no Joe, which just celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary back in January.  I absolutely love this series and it’s a damn shame that a series as influential as Ashita no Joe doesn’t get the attention it deserves! So I’m going to give this gem its time in the sun (again), by looking at the anime’s protagonist Joe Yabuki and how such a flawed individual managed to take the boxing world by storm!

I Ship It: 5 Non-Canon Couples That Totally Should Have Been Canon- BL Edition

Have you ever seen two characters that you knew were perfect for one another? Friends that have known each other since they were in diapers. Or maybe bitter rivals that hate each other, but still somehow harbor a deep respect for one another. Or perhaps, they’re the unstoppable baka duo on a high school sports team. I’m talking about those bonds forged through a deep emotional connection between two characters, the kind of bond that transcends the confines of the author’s original intent! RELATIONSHIPS BORN FROM THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF FANS… BEAUTIFUL DELUSIONS THAT GIVE A MIDDLE FINGER TO THE CANON SENSIBILITIES OF THE CREATORS!!

It’s shipping.

I’m talking about shipping…

Whether you love it or hate it, shipping is an integral part of every fandom. If two characters so much as breathe the same air as one another, I guarantee there is a person out there that ships it. But, are shippers really as crazy as folks make them out to be? Is there any basis for their pairings? Are there secret hints hidden in the source material that supports these ships? *shrugs noncommittally* I’m kind of on the fence about shipping, on one hand I do ship characters and I quite enjoy fanfiction, but, I also don’t go out of my way to ship X character with Y character while watching or reading something… that is unless the subtext is blatantly obvious, and that’s how this post was born!

There are times when the subtext is just so in your face you can’t help but connect the dots. In this post I’m going to spotlight 5 non-canon pairings that should have been canon, because… reasons!! This list is not in any particular order, I just listed the pairings in the order they came to me, which I suppose could be used to suss out which pairings are my favorite… but, it’s not. My real OTP isn’t even on this list because as much as I hate to admit it, there really isn’t any in series evidence for the pairing… not that it stops me from loving that particular ship. So, all aboard, this ship is about to set sail!!

Fangirl Moment: Kuroo Tetsurou

Hey Hey all you wonderful Heroes, Travelers, and Wandering NPCs! It’s Friday and that means another Fangirl Moments post, the series where I fangirl over anything and everything, from anime and manga to movies and books, everything up for grabs!

Last week, I covered the animated Netflix series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, so if you missed that post definitely check it out!! This week I’m doing things a little differently, instead of covering a form of media, I’m going to talk about a specific character and instead of doing a character analysis, I’m going to do a Top 5 list, because *whispers* I’m writing this from my work computer and my supervisor is coming into the office to shadow…. and this post is kind of time sensitive.

TetsuroKuuro

So today, November 17th is the birthday of my favorite Haikyuu captain, Kuroo “Bedhead” Tetsurou, and in honor of his b-day, I’m going to write about the Top 5 Reasons Kuroo is the Captain of My Heart!! Okay that sounded way better in my head…

30 Day Haikyuu Challenge: Days 16- Favorite Uniform

It’s day 16 of the 30 Day Haikyuu Challenge and I’m going to share with you guys my favorite uniform!

haikyuu challenge

Since this challenge didn’t come with any instructions or anything like that, I’m going to assume they mean  volleyball uniforms and not school uniforms. Though if you want to know, I am partial to the Nekoma High school uniform, that sweater vest and blazer combo is to die for!

But that’s neither here nor there… As for my favorite volleyball uniform, that’s another matter entirely! I thought about this long and hard, and after much deliberation I decided to go with….

30 Day Haikyuu Challenge: Days 15- Favorite Animal Representation

I’m failing so hard at this challenge, hopefully I can be a bit more consistent from now on (no promises). I’m not one for excuses, so let’s get this show on the road, shall we… We’re up to day 15 of the 30 Day Haikyuu Challenge and today’s prompt is My Favorite Animal Representation.

haikyuu challenge

I have to give it to the creator of this challenge, this is definitely a unique prompt and a challenging topic to write about. There are so many great teams in Haikyuu and each one has their own unique animal representation, each with their own merits. So, choosing one over the others is not an easy task… Okay, so really it was only hard to choose between just three teams and their animal representations and you can probably guess which ones…
