[OWLS Blog Tour] We’re All Pork Cutlet Bowls: The Relatability of the Underdog’s Dream in Yuri!!! on Ice

Hey hey all you Heroes and Travelers out there today I’m bringing you all another super special awesome OWLS post!! Back in December I mentioned that I’d joined OWLS: Otaku Warriors of Liberty and Self-Respect, a group of bloggers and vloggers that hope to spread a message of acceptance and understanding through thoughtful community activism!

owl

So, in order to spread our message of self acceptance and tolerance, we’ve decided to hold Monthly Blog Tours! During Blog Tours, we each write individual theme posts on our blogs that promote our group’s values, with a bit of an otaku twist.  February’s Blog Tour topic is Flight in Yuri!!! on Ice!

The inspiration for this post came from a post I read a few months ago over on Pop Culture Uncovered (LINK). It’s a short post, but one that everyone can relate to, so when it was announced that Yuri!!! On Ice would be the topic for this month’s blog tour, I immediately thought back to this author’s post, and the rest was, well, history.

Last Week Today: Week End Recap- Feb. 12th to Feb. 18th

Hello Heroes and Travelers, here we are at the end of another week here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero! Sorry this post is so late, but I’m still at Katsucon, an annual anime convention here in the DMV area… I’ve been having so much fun going to panels and snapping photos of cosplayers!!

20170216_185438

Well, today is the last day of the con and while I may have spent more money than I originally intended, I had a blast!! I met some cool people, saw some amazing cosplays, and sat in on some great panels! Oh, yeah side note… I created an Instagram account, I’m a complete noob when it comes to social media sites, so I have no idea what to do with it really. I’ve been posting con pics on it all weekend, so if you’re curious definitely follow me, I’m poke_ninja90!

Fangirl Moment: Don’t Blame Me

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m covering one of the first BL manga I ever read! So when I saw it on sale on the Juné site, I wasted no time snapping it up. Of course I reread it for this post, and OMG, I fell in love with the story all over again… I’m talking about the yaoi classic, Don’t Blame Me (Ore wa Wakarunai) by Yugi Yamada!

For those of you that have been following me for a while, you might recognize this manga from my Top 5 BL/Yaoi Titles post, as the series that showed me there was more to BL than sex. This a heartwarming manga and one of my all time favorites!!

[Special Valentines Day Guest Blogger] My Boyfriend Played an Otome Game?!- Roommates: Max’s Side

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY… or Singles Awareness Day all you wonderful Heroes and Travelers, today we have a special guest post from my BF… Yeah, ya’ll read that right, I convinced my boyfriend to play an otome game for a very special Valentines Day Game Review!! WOOT! Since, he puts up with my constant fangirling on a regular basis, I figured why not let him experience the wonders of otome games… So, I picked a few games for him to try out and he fell asleep on all of them, except Winter Wolves’s slice of life romance visual novel, Roommate! Since he doesn’t really play otome games, I didn’t make him play through the whole game, that would have been cruel and unusual punishment on my part… Anyway, I’ve done enough talking, so, I’m gonna turn things over to my BF, Myles!

Greetings to all you awesome people out there. I don’t normally blog or write about things like dating sims games including stat raising of all things, but its Valentine’s Day and my girlfriend, Pokeninja90, insisted (coerced) me to play one. I have played a few games like this before, but more for the nude pics I could get not for the fun of the story (hentai sims). I’d like to say that despite not seeing any hot pixel skin, the story was on point. I’m kinda happy she forced “asked me to play a route”. Besides with all of the stat raising I did, maybe I can earn a few points myself.

Roommates follows the new college student Max as he begins a new chapter in life you all know as college. Like any new college student he has money issues so he picks the least expensive housing for his first year which lands him a room in a boarding house. In his new home he meets his roommates which are Sally, Anne, Isabella, Rakesh, and his RA Dominic. They go through wacky events from concerts, study dates, parties, to everyone’s favorite drinking games. As all these events unfold, your goal is to set things up perfectly for the right events to take place to get that special someone.

Melanin Monday: I Am Not Your Stereotype- Racial Representation in Anime [Part I]

Hey, hey all you wonderful Heroes and Travelers out there it’s Monday, and that means another Melanin Monday post!! For those of you just joining us, Melanin Monday is a special weekly post series that I started for Black History Month (I might be persuaded to continue the series, if interest is high enough), where I talk about Black and Brown skinned characters in anime, manga, video games, etc. Last week I did a Top 5 List of My Favorite Black Female Anime Characters and this week, I’m gonna do things a little differently…

As a Black nerd, it’s hard to find strong characters that look like me in the media, more times than not people of color, especially African American people are cast as criminals, villains, or worst of all hurtful stereotypes. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen my people used as the butt of someone else’s joke and quite frankly, it pisses me off! Even my beloved anime, as progressive as it is, has some rather questionable black and brown characters… So, for this week’s post, I wanted to look at the various ways anime portrays people of color, both the negative and the positive portrayals. This post wound up being longer than I originally intended, so I decided to split it into two parts! Part I focuses on the negative stereotypes and Part II which will go up on the last Monday of the Month will focus on the more positive depictions of POC in anime.

*Disclaimer: I realize that this is a touchy subject for some people, but I want to let you all know right now, that while comments are welcome, I will not tolerate any personal attacks or overtly nasty comments. If you can’t discuss this post in a respectful and civilized manner, then keep your hands off the keyboard… I promise you I will not be very forgiving of anyone that uses my comments section as such! 😀

Last Week Today: Week End Recap- Feb. 5th to Feb. 11th

Hello Heroes and Travelers, here we are at the end of another week here on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero! I apologize for being late with this post, but I was reading this amazing Kuroo x Tsukki fanfic, and I was riding the emotional highs and lows… Just wow! I watched my ship crash and burn and then… miraculously rise from the ashes, like a phoenix!! Ya’ll there are literally tears of joy in my eyes right now…

emotions

I’m still trying to recover from emotional roller coaster and there’s still one chapter left until it’s finished, but at least for the time being, my ship is safe! After I finish this post, I’m going to sink right back into KuroTsuki Hell… so, please… don’t try to rescue me…

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, next weekend I will be going to Katsucon (2/17-2/19), so aside from a crap ton of tweets, I’ll be rather hard to pin down until next Monday (2/20). The Con shouldn’t effect the blog too much since I’ll be writing most of my posts before I go, just expect replies to comments to be even slower than usual!

[Guest Blogger] Jilted: Men of Yoshiwara – Hayabusa | Main Story Review

Hello Heroes and Travelers, today we have a special guest post from my blogging buddy and newest otoge recruit, Hazel from over at Archi-Anime!! This is her first ever otome game review and I am so happy that I was able to drag her into otoge hell with me! *rubs hands together* So join me in welcoming her to Nice Job Breaking It, Hero and without further ado, I’m gonna turn things over to Hazel!!

Good afternoon bloggers! Hazelyn here from the anime blog Archi-Anime. Today Naja and I are bringing you a very special collaboration post! This will be my first Otome game review ever, and a very first collaboration post. Hooray for firsts! I’m a bit late to the otome game, but hey, better late than never!

A few months ago I befriended Naja, whom as of late has become a really good friend of mine, I would like to say! I call her the otome queen and my Otome/BL Senpai. I have much to learn, and she has already dragged me down into backlog hell with the amount of games that must are to be played.

I’ve always wanted to write a review of an otome game, so when Naja senpai approached me to write a collaboration on a route I was both ecstatic and flattered she wanted to do this. She had already gotten me hooked onto Voltage games (bye money!) and I was still fairly a n00b to otome. So far I’ve been spoiled with a lot of great routes! So we decided to try a game neither of us had barely any experience with. I had played one route on the mobile version (Iroha), but I ended up buying it on steam during the Winter Steam Sale because it was more cost-efficient than paying per route.

Men of Yoshiwara.pngThe game we ended up choosing was The Men of Yoshiwara: Kikuya. There are a total of two Men of Yoshiwara games, the other being The Men of Yoshiwara: Oghiya, in which our MC is vastly different-but more on the Kikuya version of her later.

Fangirl Moment: Hot Gimmick

TGIF! Here we are again with another Fangirl Friday! This week I’m covering a manga that’s just so bad it’s good. There are so many reasons to hate this manga, unnecessary angst, drama, questionable romantic relationships, just to name a few, but for some reason I can’t bring myself to condemn it and believe me I tried! I’m talking about the shoujo manga,  Hot Gimmick by Mika Aihara!

hot-gimmick-2

I have never read a manga so problematic before in my life, but there’s a beauty to it, albeit a twisted and rather cringe worthy kind of beauty… This manga is like watching a really bad soap opera or those telenovelas, you just have to see where all the madness leads, even if a little piece of your soul dies in the process.
